Social media can be addicting.
With the start of the new year, I made some simple goals for myself. Some of the goals included becoming more organized, exercising and spending more quality time with my family.
The new year started off strong. In fact, this past week I organized a few places in my house and got rid of some items that I didn’t need anymore. However, while doing so, I noticed I really needed to reorganize my priorities as well.
I’ve run this blog since 2008 and because of this, I have had to be on social media to help ‘promote’ it. I finally decided it was time for me to take a step back. I needed to make more time for my family and for myself.
As of yesterday, I deactivated all my personal social media accounts. Social media while fun can be quite dangerous. I have noticed that it has robbed me of giving my full attention to my family. How many times have my kids asked me to watch them do something while I was scrolling through Facebook? “I’m busy,” I would say. Busy doing what? Most of the time, nothing productive.
Social media is a wonderful tool to have, and maybe someday I will return to a channel or two. However, I am so excited to have more of the type of interactions I love. Looking at another person in the eye, giving them my undivided attention and letting them know they matter.
Social media and I have broken up for now. While I am grateful for the platform it has given me, I am ready to disconnect and live my life offline for a while.
