The duo’s fifth album begins with All Star. Yes, that same one we all know from Shrek (and endless replays on the radio.) But also no. While Shrek made the album universally recognizable, Andrew & Polly carefully revised some of the lyrics to substitute genuine positivity with the sarcasm of the original. The finished product presents the messages we hope to infuse in our children, packaged in that same peppy anthem.
Although both prolific musicians, in this new album they join forces with some of their friends, including Mista Cookie Jar, to bring an even more fun energy to the music.
After the All Star remake, my next favourite song is Chair School. My son agrees. He repeats from the back seat “chair school? Chair school?” In case you’re wondering, it isn’t a school for chairs, but a place for people to learn how to properly use a chair. (Namely, how to not fall out, haha.) Funny and quirky, the song makes me chuckle whenever I think of it.
Although maybe Chair School isn’t my favourite song. Mr. Rogers’ Garden of Your Mind receives a loving portrayal in this album as well. Keeping balance with the serious life-lessons infused in these beautiful songs, Andrew & Polly also season the album with trombone jokes in Brass Chuckles, and take us far into the absurd with Three Chartreuse Buzzards. Truly something for everyone in this album.
