A few weeks ago my family and I ventured to Tysons II in Tysons, Virginia to see Cirque du Soleil’s “Volta” under the big top.
I’ve been lucky enough to see quite a few Cirque du Soleil shows including my favorite, O at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. It was my first Cirque show and I have been hooked ever since.
One thing to know going in is that each and every Cirque show is unique and beautiful in its own way. “Volta” is a bit more narrative than other Cirque shows I have seen which I really enjoyed.
“Volta” revolves around the story of a boy who struggles with fitting in because he has blue feathers for hair. At the beginning of the show, you see that he really struggles with the fact that he is different and because of this he feels like he doesn’t belong.
VOLTA is a spellbinding story about the freedom to choose and the thrill of blazing your own trail – inspired by the adventurous spirit of street sports.
Throughout each of the different acts, the boy finds more and more confidence and by the end of the show, he learns that being different is actually quite beautiful.
“Volta’s” music is upbeat and fun and is beautifully sung by Eric DeShan and Camilla Bäckman. The costumes, the makeup, and lighting are all beautiful and precise.
Of course, you go to Cirque du Soleil shows expecting to be wowed by the acts. Don’t worry “Volta” won’t let you down as all of the acts are amazing! My favorite acts were Danila Bim, who suspends by her hair, the BMX bikers and Andrey Kislitsin who is a brilliant clown! Kislitsin’s act with the washing machines had a bit of a snag at the end of our show and left the audience and Kislitsin in stitches.
My favorite part of the night is watching my kids faces as they sat mesmerized by each of the acts. It was so lovely to walk away from “Volta” with my family talking about what each of us took away from the show. My 8-year-old son loved learning that “being different is good.”
Watching the rest of the audience disperse from the Cirque tent was especially fun to see. Each and every person left with a smile on their face. How could you not? Volta is a captivating voyage of discovery for everyone young and old!
