There once was a time when every time I cleaned my husband got suddenly hungry for chips and my kids complained that the house stank. Those were the vinegar days. The vinegar days mark the beginning of my quest to improve the indoor air quality in my home. I was also concerned with using cleansers that would not harm my family if accidentally ingested. I’ve since also become concerned with other environmental and ethical issues.
Truce recently caught my attention. They manufacture their products in the United States. This not only provides jobs to friends and neighbors, but eliminates the needs for international shipping (and the negative environmental impact thereof.) They believe that cleaning supplies should do good in addition to be good. In fact, their All Purpose Cleanser even comes in a concentrated formula. When you add the water to the bottle after purchase, you reduce the waste of shipping water across the country. Once I started thinking about that I wondered why more companies don’t do the same. Adding tap water and shaking up the bottle is not rocket science.
The All Purpose Cleanser is scented with peppermint essential oils. It is perfect for refreshing a space while I’m cleaning, and it doesn’t make my children gag and complain. Nor does it make my husband go hunting in the pantry for salty snacks.
The yoga mat cleanser and hand sanitizer are equally awesome. The yoga mat cleaner is exactly what you need to refresh your mat after a sweaty practice. Believe me, child’s pose is not as effective when you’re nose to a stinky mat as you are to a clean one. (Bonus points for the hint of peppermint. Deep inhale. Aaaaaahhhhh.)
I keep the hand sanitizer in my car. I don’t use hand sanitizer often, but I definitely like a refresh after shopping -and touching everything everyone else has touched. Unlike other sanitizers, this one doesn’t dry out my hands. The added aloe helps soothe my skin, while the peppermint and rosemary are pleasant instead of sterile. I might start using sanitizer more often just because I really like the stuff!
I found the laundry detergent to be effective with my whites and colours without fading. This powdered detergent is unscented. Since my mother developed an anaphylactic allergy to scented products I’ve worked to avoid added “fragrance”. While I don’t miss the scented products I used to use, I was concerned that an unscented laundry detergent may not be up to the challenge of my teenaged sons’ musky clothes. Fortunately this detergent did an admirable job of cleaning while still being delicate enough for whatever special fabric it is their winter wear that keeps them warm without bulk but for some reason requires hand washing only. Tired of handwashing, and tired of the smell, I used Truce on the delicate cycle in cold water and hung them to dry. And it worked! I am so relieved to no longer hand wash those jackets!
I love incorporating clean and safe products in my home. Hooray for machine washing something listed as hand wash only. We don’t have to sacrifice our health for the sake of cleanliness. We can call a truce on the cleaning wars.
