While a lot of our material possessions are still in boxes or some transitional pile, we are making progress with settling into our new home. Moving is hard work and the kids have needed a lot of fun breaks. We recently discovered a new game, Mastermind, which has been a fantastic diversion from unpacking and cleaning and sorting and stressing.

This two-person game sets one player as the code maker and the other as the code breaker. Using coloured pegs the code breaker guesses the hidden code and the code maker provides clues as to how close the guess is to the actual code until finally the code is broken. The code breaker has to use logic and deductive reasoning. The code maker has to try to anticipate and preempt the code breaker’s guesses.
These boys are 11 and 13. They love video games. These days they don’t always enjoy being together, cooperating, or doing whatever I’ve devised for them. Despite all of that, they really enjoyed playing Mastermind. In fact the grumpier of the two has asked repeatedly to play more. They’ve rejoiced in identifying each others’ tells, and finding patterns in their strategy. I have loved hearing one say “I won that one because I knew exactly what he was thinking!”

I love that it has them working together again. Their transitions to middle school and high school, respectively, haven’t been good for their brotherhood. I also love that it’s a thinking, and interactive game. With no batteries required! This is going to be a family classic for a long time.

As the days get shorter and colder we retreat more indoors. We are also entering the time of year with gift giving, and lots of get togethers. We are definitely going to take this game along to play with cousins and friends, as well as pull it out when we have company. In fact we had a neighbour friend over and playing just the other day. He thought he was an expert, having played the original Mastermind with his older sister, but my middle son won that round, gracefully I’m proud to say. Grab one of these as a gift, grab another for our own family.
