Being born and raised in New Jersey has made me a pizza snob. After my family and I moved to Virginia I was so glad to find a pizza joint run by three brothers from Brooklyn. Their pizza was amazing and exactly the type of pizza I grew up eating. That being said, now that I am older I don’t love how heavy and greasy typical pizza can make me feel after eating it. When I heard that Oath Pizza a company that believes in ‘pizza without the baggage,’ was opening near me, I knew I had to try it out for myself.
Oath Pizza doesn’t only believe in ‘pizza without baggage,’ they also believe that ‘different can also be better, that little things can make a big difference, and that doing the right thing helps to realize human potential.’ At Oath Pizza they start with a hand-stretched dough that’s grilled and seared in avocado oil for a crispness and texture unmatched and unlike anything else. Their pizzas are then artfully designed using sustainable and ethically sourced ingredients, in fact, Oath Pizza is the 1st pizza chain to be granted certified humane approval.
Oath also offers Stubborn Soda at all of their locations. Stubborn Soda contains no artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup and only uses natural flavors. Their fun flavor combinations meld nicely with Oath’s pizza selections. Black Cherry with Tarragon, Agave Vanilla Cream Soda, and Orange Hibiscus are a few of the fun flavors in their lineup.
All ingredients used at Oath Pizza are the highest quality possible. Pizzas come in whole and half or you can do half a pizza and half a salad. You can customize and make your very own ‘selfie’ pizza with unlimited toppings or choose from Highly Decorated Pizzas or Classic Pizzas. Oh and Oath Pizza makes dessert pizzas too!
When I met Dave Jamieson, the general manager of our Oath Pizza location he greeted me with a friendly smile and an unmatched enthusiasm for Oath Pizza. David explained how Oath’s dough is made in their New Hampshire bakery and sent to each Oath Pizza location. I also learned that our Oath Pizza is the first location outside of the New Hampshire/Boston area to open. David explained that many more openings of Oath Pizza are on the horizon for NYC, DC, and Chicago in the next year or so. Isn’t it so exciting?
My husband and I ordered a few halves of Oath’s Highly Decorated Pizzas so we could try a variety of the pizzas they offer.
We ordered halves of the:
Bella-Mozzarella, Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, Roasted Garlic, Ricotta, Balsamic Drizzle, Grana Padano Cheese, Fresh Basil
Muffled Trushroom-House-made Truffle Sauce, Mozzarella, Roasted ‘Shrooms, Ricotta and Grana Padano Cheese
Spicy Mother Clucker-Mozzarella, Pickled Red Onions, Dry-rubbed spiced chicken, Sriracha, Spicy Aioli, Scallions
Luau-Mozzarella, BBQ Pulled Pork, Fresh Pineapple, Crushed Red Pepper, BBQ Drizzle, Scallions
Chocolate Chunk Cookie Pizza-Chocolate Chunk Cookie dough, Ricotta, Powdered Sugar
When I tell you there is NOTHING like this pizza, I mean it. The crust is out-of-this-world! Light, airy, crispy almost reminding me of a toss-up between naan bread and a flaky croissant. The beauty of Oath’s crust is that it pretty much lends itself to any topping. Normally I wouldn’t be able to down a whole pizza on my own but at Oath Pizza its no problem at all. In fact, I had a hard time stopping at just one pizza.
It is difficult to pick favorites but if I had to they would be in this order; the Luau, the Muffled Trushroom, Bella and then the Spicy Mother Clucker. The Luau has the perfect bit of spiciness but sweetness as well. The Muffled Trushroom was earthy and savory and the Bella was similar to a classic Margherita. The Spicy Mother Clucker had so much flavor, it was just a bit too spicy for me (I am a weak one with spice). My husband’s favorites? The Muffled Trushroom, the Bella and the Spicy Mother Clucker. For dessert, we had the Chocolate Chunk Cookie Pizza and my goodness was it delicious. The pizza arrived and the cookie dough was warm and gooey. Basically, imagine yourself eating the best chocolate chip cookie ever-and there you have it.
I really appreciated how fresh the ingredients were on all of the pizzas, it makes a huge difference. The thing that I love most of all about Oath is that after eating the pizza I felt great. I didn’t feel sluggish or like I had just eaten a whole pizza. When David came around to our table to see how we enjoyed everything, I announced that Oath Pizza was the “best pizza I ever had…” and I truly mean that. Sure, it is not going to take the place of my classic NYC/NJ Pizza that I allow myself a few times a year. However, Oath Pizza is somewhere I can eat on a weekly basis and feel good about it.
The pizzas are delicious but that crust, is the thing dreams are made of.
