I love the story of The Nutcracker. As a child, I remember going to New York City with my cousin to see it be performed on stage. There is something so magical about Clara, her love for the Nutcracker and their fight to be together. Even still years later, I find the story to be lovely and nostalgic. When I saw The Nutcracker, a Papercut Pop-Up Book released by Thames & Hudson publishing, I knew I had to have it for my kids.
The magic of The Nutcracker magically comes to life in this theatrical pop-up book created by artist Shobhna Patel. Patel known for her delicate laser-cut pop-ups has created a new paper technique called “paperscope,” used for the first time in this book. The book features four pop-up paperscopes which come to life when you press down to reveal hidden scenes.
I am sure most of you know the story of The Nutcracker but if you don’t please read on. The classic story begins on Christmas Eve when a little girl named Clara and her brother Fritz are gathered around the Christmas tree to celebrate with family and friends. Their mysterious uncle, Drosselmeyer the toy maker, gives Clara a beautiful wooden nutcracker who magically comes to life when the clock strikes midnight. So begins an enchanting adventure featuring all of Tchaikovsky’s original characters: the soldier mice, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and of course a handsome prince.
My family and I love The Nutcracker, A Papercut Pop-Up Book. We especially enjoy peering through the paperscopes one by one and noticing a new detail each time. The Nutcracker, A Papercut Pop-Up Book would make a lovely Holiday for young or old.
