I love Halloween. I love the candy, the crisp fall air, costumes and decorating my home. What I don’t like about Halloween is when the holiday is overwhelmed with gore and violence in movies. Growing up I saw my fair share of super scary and violent Halloween movies (thanks to a member of my family who showed them to my young sister and me without our Mothers knowledge). I hated every minute of the anxiety-filled, blood spurting movies. Worse was not being able to sleep for nights after.
As I grew up I realized that Halloween could be fun and that it didn’t have to be gross. I soon found movies that fit my idea of Halloween. The movies that I am sharing with you are fun, a little scary but with very little (if any) gore. If you are like me and enjoy a bit of suspense and a good story then you will enjoy the five films I am including below. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Happy Haunting!
The Watcher in the Woods.
My sister and I couldn’t wait until the Disney channel would play our favorite Halloween movie in the month of October. We would have it circled in the TV Guide and on our calendar in the kitchen. Whenever it was on we would cuddle up and watch this spooky movie starring Bette Davis.
Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte
In middle school, my friends and I would watch this classic psychological thriller film at sleepovers. Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Joseph Cotten, Agnes Moorehead and Mary Astor star in the film. On a beautiful old plantation in Louisianna, a reclusive Southern belle is plagued by a horrifying family secret. She slowly descends into madness after the arrival of a long lost relative.
This was another movie we watched at sleepovers in middle school. The special effects aren’t the best but it is still frightening at times. A classic Alfred Hitchcock for sure. I promise you will never look at birds the same way again.
I remember going to see Hocus Pocus when it came out in theaters (yes, I am old). This 1993 film stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. Three witch sisters are resurrected after three centuries in Salem, Massachusetts and start mischief. Two teenagers, an immortal cat, and a young girl work together to get rid of the sisters for good.
Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara are just a few of the amazing actors that star in this Tim Burton film. The premise? A recently-deceased husband and wife find their new home invaded by an extremely modern and annoying family, they hire Beetlejuice to give them a helping hand. Unfortunately, they didn’t know all they were signing up for when they asked for his help.
