I grew up under the water. Okay not literally, but basically. As soon as I could swim, my Dad would take my siblings and I out in the water with him scuba diving. We couldn’t scuba dive ourselves because we were too small to carry our own tanks, but he’d nuzzle us safely next to him, and we’d use his “buddy air” to breathe. My memories of those special moments sprouted my deep love for the ocean blue.
The Hubs and I headed back to Kauai this year sans kiddos and added a few friends instead! I wanted to share my love for scuba diving with my besties, but unfortunately I was the only one PADI certified. One of the men thought SNUBA would be fun and when we figured out what it was, I totally agreed! It’s the perfect way to be in the ocean without leaving the shore that far behind.
SNUBA is reminiscent of scuba; you still use a regulator to breathe and hip weights to keep you buoyant, but your heavy tank is safely stored in a floating raft above you! You partner up and share one tank, but each have your own regulator and breathing tube, which I would guess is about 15 feet long. You’ll be deep, but not too deep so it’s perfection for anyone who might be curious about how the sand feels underneath those billowy waves.
We set off at the beach in sunny Poipu, which is my favorite spot on the island. The SNUBA guys set us up with all the gear: water shoes, masks, harnesses, tanks, and regulators. They instructed us on everything and went out in the water with us so we never felt like we were winging it on our own. Several of my friends had never tried anything like this and were super nervous, but ended the excursion really happy about having given it a try. We saw and held squishy sea cucumbers and wiggly sea stars, and altogether had a great time!
We recommend SNUBA KAUAI to anyone and everyone! Next time we bring our kiddos back, I want to take them with us so they can experience it too 🙂
