It’s no secret if you’re a loyal follower of our blog, you know we’re huge fans of the tiny island of Kauai in the South Pacific. In fact, my husband and I met there 12 years ago. The first time I saw him he was literally walking out of the ocean with a surf board under his arm, so you can imagine that Kauai holds a special place in my heart.
We decided there couldn’t be a better place to celebrate our anniversary this year, so we headed back for some serious fun, sans kiddos. We wanted to do some adventurous excursions and Kayaking the Wailua river was at the top of our list.
The Wailua River is super wide and covered with green jungle on both sides of the bank. Kayakers and boats alike travel the river daily, and we really wanted to experience the river up close and personal. I did some research and discovered Kayak Adventures Kauai and instantly knew they were the avenue for us. They have a personal tour guide to take groups up the river, and then on a small hike to Secret Falls for a magical lunch spot.
We started the day at the kayak shop where we were supplied with cold water bottles, snacks, and wet bags to keep our clothes and towels dry for the ride. We had an introduction to the kayaks from our guide and then headed for the water. The Wailua River was just as beautiful as we imagined, and the kayak was a lot more sturdy than I imagined which was a pleasant surprise.
I’ll tell you what friends, that kayak required some serious team work. The Hubs and I manned a kayak together, and if you’re wanting to test your marriage, paddle a kayak together (baaa hahaha). Don’t get me wrong, we had a great time! We just really had to learn to work together, which was an experience in itself.
When we got to the hike spot, we pulled the kayaks in and hopped out to set off. I wouldn’t say it was an easy hike, I was definitely huffing a puffing a few times. It was up and down and there were even ropes on the side of the trail to grab a hold and help you along. Make sure to wear shoes and clothes that you aren’t afraid to get muddy in! But not to worry, the mud was part of the fun.
The waterfalls were huge and gorgeous! As per typical for Hawaiian waterfalls 🙂 It was a dream spot to sit and eat lunch, take a dip to rinse off the mud, catch our breath, and set off on the trail again. I loved all the informational tidbits from our guide along the trail, and can you believe he did the whole thing barefoot! That’s real Hawaii right there people.
This excursion with Kayak Adventures was definitely one for the books! It’s a must do for adventure-seekers and is a great way to get into the down and dirty of Kauai, Hawaii.
