In my opinion, there is no better time to visit the Jersey Shore than in the summertime. The warm salty breeze off of the ocean, the granules of sand wedged between your toes (and other places). Being raised at the Jersey Shore I have so many fond memories of long summer days. I also have lots of recommendations for summer fun-don’t forget I am a Jersey Girl (I’ll take one pork roll, egg and cheese please!). One of my recommendations is visiting Tuckerton Seaport in Tuckerton, NJ.
Tuckerton Seaport is located along the historic Tuckerton Creek was once known as the Barnegat Bay Decoy and Baymen’s Museum. Tuckerton Seaport’s mission is to preserve, present and interpret the rich maritime heritage, artistry, and environment of the Jersey Shore and the unique contributions of its baymen. I love that Tuckerton allows visitors to experience NJ’s rich maritime history. I can’t wait to bring my children here where they can learn all about the beautiful state I grew up in!
Tuckerton Seaport has evolved into a 40-acre maritime village including;
- 17 historic/recreating buildings
- a boardwalk
- a maritime forest and wetlands nature trail
- 2 houseboats
- decoy gallery
- working Boatworks building (including restoration of sneakbox designs of Barnegat Bay)
- a historic marine railway (under construction)
- decoy carving workshops
- recreated Tucker’s Island Lighthouse
- Jersey Shore Folklife Center
- The Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Center
- demonstrators such as; decoy carvers, boat builders, quilters, basket makers, commercial fishermen
- Traditional Jersey Shore artists available for hands-on activities, workshops, tours, and classes.
The Borough of Tuckerton and Tuckerton Creek is located in one of the least disturbed places on the northeast coast of the United States. Which means it is beautiful!
