My kids think they’re a bit old for swings. They don’t go near them at the park and they hadn’t played with ours in years. But really, swinging is a centering activity for everyone, no matter what age. I knew as soon as I saw the Swurfer that it would satisfy the swinging need without making my growing-up boys look too young. I mean, a surfboard swing? It’s perfect! Who wouldn’t love that?!
The Swurfer is an American company focused on quality and built to last. The cleverly-curved board is made of solid maple, can hold up to 250 pounds so this is definitely not just something for the kids! You can read more about their history here. Since we put it up my boys have invited kids over just to see the Swurfer! (Or, more accurately, to watch my kids show off, the neighbour kids’ turns have been disproportionately brief.)
We’ve had dinner parties without the house being destroyed, we’ve had playdate after playdate without an equal amount of time cleaning up afterward, because the kids have been outside doing tricks on the Swurfer. It’s so wonderful to see them outdoors and moving their bodies and trying new things! I feel like our kids don’t get as many opportunities for that as they need.
That’s especially true for my middle son who has a very high play quotient but, like all the other 9 year old boys in our town, feels the strong draw to electronics. He doesn’t make the connection that the video games aren’t meeting his need for unstructured play. He and I have made a short list of things that support “imagination time” and the Swurfer is at the top of our list. He’s stopped telling me he’s bored and has stopped asking what he can do. He rushes through his piano and reading and homework to go out and play. It’s been so wonderful! I’ve been telling him to play outside since we moved to the suburbs and bought a back yard (and accompanying house) but until we got the Swurfer he hasn’t had much stamina without some combination or projectiles and water. Finally he has something he can do while also clearing his head.
Get it get it get it. That’s all I have to say. If you need us, we’ll be out back. Surfing in the suburbs.
