I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It’s something that I am very proud of and has aided in shaping me into the person I have become today. Church is three hours long and begins with a Sacrament meeting which is about an hour and ten minutes of listening to speakers anywhere from 12-100 years old. I love going to church every Sunday and feeling that burn from the spirit in my heart. The tricky part for me now is, I have four kiddos ages 6 years – 7 months. Getting them to feel that burning in their heart from the spirit and more importantly, sit quietly and listen to speakers for an hour and ten minutes is nearly impossible.
I know what you’re thinking. I have seen those moms on Sunday who totally have their act together and have trained their kids to sit like statues and take in every word being spewed from the pulpit. I am not one of those moms. I’m more of a “can we shove any more chocolate crackers into that kid’s mouth so he’ll stop screaming” mom. I want to teach my kids to find the desire in their heart and I do my best to be a shinning example to them but church is hard for little ones! I need to have something that can be a helpful distraction so they can play(ish) during Sacrament meeting while also learning stories from the teachings of the Church.
I am totally in love with the Quiet Books from My Growing Season. They are out of this world adorable and each page is filled with brightly colored developmental activities to keep your child entertained, engaged, and learning. The founder and creator Michele chooses primary colors that catch the eye of small children and keep them turning page by page.
We have My LDS Quiet Book, My Book of Mormon Quiet Book, and My Bible Quiet Book. Every page has a well known scripture story that my kids know and love to identify. My four year old just learned about Joseph and his coat of many colors and was over the moon when she found him in the My Bible Quiet Book. It’s so exciting for me to teach my children and be able to reinforce the teachings with these beautiful colored pages.
There are activities like weaving a basket for baby Moses to float down the river, lacing a shoe for church, feeding a face healthy foods to obey the Word of Wisdom, and finger puppets galore which are a huge hit with all three of my girls. You can play with Daniel and the lions in the den, a bride and groom getting married in the Salt Lake Temple, or different people from around the globe that have received the Book of Mormon. Each piece and page is made with love and they aren’t produced on big machines so there are variations with the pieces which is great because it’s unique for your family. We’ve had our My LDS Quiet Book for years and it’s totally held up beautifully. It’s been through chocolate fingers, baby spit up, and peanut butter (I know… I should be questioning my church snack choices). There’s nothing that hasn’t been able to wipe clean, and the colors are still as vibrant as the day we bought it.
There are several other choices if you would prefer something other than LDS and scripture centered Quiet Books. You can choose from five other books that will keep your kiddos just as engaged and quietly playing like Home Sweet Home and Let’s Count 123. Michele also let me know that there are some fun new books in the works so make sure to subscribe to her email list so you can be among the first to know when those are released!
These darling books really do keep my littles quiet at church, and now, I don’t have to bring so many snacks. Hooray! I love being able to pull these out during Sacrament and keep their little growing minds focused on the gospel and the teachings of the Church. I feel like maybe now I can get my act together with these books in my church bag. Maybe my kids won’t be statues quietly listening to the speakers, but they’ll be quietly engaged in gospel stories. Make sure you get more than one if you have a few kiddos to avoid any loud conflicts at church (haha)! Think Christmas people! This book would be a fabulous addition under anyone’s tree.
