There’s very little that’s fun that arrives in the mail, and as for our children, there’s basically nothing fun for them. I’ve tried to get them set up with pen pals, but so far nothing has panned out. One day I stumbled across Mail Order Mystery and I knew I had found something unique.
Not only was the packet that came in the mail enough to pique the curiosity of everyone in our family, but it was incomplete enough to require some thought by my children. It took thought, it took time, and over the next few days they tinkered at the code with no cipher. They complained a little, because my kids are used to easy answers, and I just told them honestly that I didn’t know what the solution was and that I was glad they were being challenged.
After several days, a week maybe, another piece of the puzzle arrived in the mail, but it didn’t seem that way. As my older son was leisurely reading it a clue popped up at him and he bounced off the couch to find his notes.
A week or so after that they received yet another package in the mail. I was really impressed with the way the mystery dangled along. It was fun to do some codebreaking with the boys. It was fun to see them a little stumped. I really didn’t know how many packages to expect so every time there was a new one in the mail it was the best kind of surprise. Each package varied in size, content, and sender.
I wish I had paid more attention to the quantity and frequency, but I tried really hard to butt out and leave it up to them. I will say that at the beginning my middle schooler was a little “too cool” for all of it, but as each envelope arrived he paid more and more attention and in the end he could identify a particular type of code by sight and know exactly where to look to solve it.
When the final package arrived, complete with “treasure”, some neighbour boys were over as well. The other boys were very impressed with the trinkets and very eager to know how the boys got them. My boys proudly told them it was from Mail Order Mystery. I realized at this point if I had never said anything the whole thing could be more mysterious, but even with my full disclosure at the beginning we had so much fun.
We had fun! I was surprised they received so many packages, the mailings continued for about a month, and was impressed with the variety of the challenges and with the problem solving and cliff hangers each package provided. This would make a cool gift but would be even more fun is to have it as an out of the blue surprise.
Our kids have it so good — wouldn’t you love to have had something like this when you were young? I know I would!
I received this product free of charge for the purpose of this review.
