My husband and I just celebrated 13 years of marriage and for 13 years of marriage I have HATED this piece of furniture….
Why? You might ask….
JUST LOOK AT THAT COLOR….yuck!
I have told myself many times I needed to find the time to repaint it but have kept on putting it off. I have kept the oak chest hidden in different parts of our homes throughout the years and this year I had finally had enough. It was time to give this solid piece of furniture a new look.
A few months ago I was looking through a shop with furniture that had been given new life with ‘Milk Paint.’ I loved the way this paint made the furniture take on an antiqued shabby chic color and look. As soon as I saw this furniture I knew that I wanted to redo a few places and items in my home with it. I decided to go with The Real Milk Paint Co. which is environmentally friendly and non-toxic. This paint is safe to use around kid’s and pets as it contains zero VOCs and gives off no odor during or after application. I love that my kid’s can help me paint with Milk Paint if they choose to and I don’t have to worry about toxins; formaldehyde, hydrochloric acid, benzene and tolune. Real Milk Paint has a water-based formula making clean up easy!
The Real Milk Paint Co. offers 55 beautiful milk based paint color options so you can be sure to find the perfect color for your project.
I decided to re-do my chest with the color ‘Beachglass.’ Beachglass is described as a frosty, light blueish green, like glass gems remade and tumbled in the surf. Being originally from the Jersey shore and looking for a color that would match many of the items in our master bedroom ‘Beachglass’ was the perfect color.
I received a quart of Beachglass and included in the quart was powdered paint (enclosed in a plastic bag) and a marble. The directions instructed me to mix equal parts paint with water and then shake it in the paint container (with the marble) for 5-10 minutes until the paint and water were mixed throughly. I shook the can for about five minutes and the paint was ready. I then mixed some Ultra Bond Adhesion promoter in with a bit of the Milk Paint paint in a separate pan to use for my first three coats. Since the chest had been painted in the past I wanted to make sure that the paint would adhere to the surface. Using the Ultra Bond gives greater adhesion to non-porous surfaces and previously painted surfaces. I used a natural bristle brush to apply the first three coats of paint and let them dry after each application (the paint dries really quickly which is something I LOVE). I then did three coats of just the Milk Paint without Ultra Bond and wah-la!
I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how the oak chest turned out. I now have it placed proudly on display. My husband loves the finished product as do my friends and family members. I love how easy it was to use The Real Milk Paint Co.’s Milk Paint. Set up, painting and clean up was literally a breeze. I especially loved that I could paint inside my home with my poodle and children near by without worrying about toxic fumes or chemicals. I can’t wait to use The Real Milk Paint Co.‘s milk paint on more projects throughout my home.
