Alice Through the Looking Glass Disney’s sequel to the widely successful Alice in Wonderland opened in theaters on May 26th. My family was lucky enough to attending the press screening of the movie on Tuesday evening. Attending the press screening were myself and my daughter (9) and son (5).
While Alice in Wonderland was directed by Tim Burton the sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass was directed by James Bobin. Why did Burton not return to direct? Burton told movie producer Suzanne Todd that “Sequels are not my thing.” The all-star cast still features Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska and has added Sacha Baron Cohen for this film.
Six years have passed since Tim Burton directed Alice in Wonderland and while both movies are gorgeous visually that is where the similarities end.
Alice is now a grown woman and a sea captain who has traveled the world but now finds herself in perl from loosing her boat and home when she returns to London. She is lured into a looking glass by the caterpillar (now butterfly) which transports her back to Wonderland. Once there, Alice is learns that the Mad (now rather sad) Hatter is now dying. You see, the Hatter is convinced that his family (once thought dead at the hands of the Queen of Heart’s Jabberwocky) is alive and everyone’s lack of faith is killing him (literally). Alice must travel through time to rewrite the days leading up to their demise, but discovers that playing with time has epic consequences.
