This may come as a big shock to those of you who don’t know how little tv we watch in our house, but “The Little House That Stood” is the first VeggieTales I’d ever seen. I’m pleased to report that everyone in the family enjoyed this DVD, even my husband. In this DVD those adorable talking vegetables parody nursery rhymes to help illustrate biblical parables.
The title story combines the Three Little Pigs with the parable of the wise and foolish builders, teaching the young audience that your building materials mean little if not built upon “solid stuff.” The homes built on the sandy foundation did not withstand the unprecedented storm which came to town, a good lesson for all of us to remember when considering all aspects of our lives.
The second story takes us to Humpty Dumpty and shows us what happened to that ol’ egg before he cracked. It’s a sweet story of looking after your neighbours and a cautionary tale of the ripple effect that can happen when we don’t help each other out.
Both stories encourage children to make good choices and to think about the consequences in a way that is fun and not preachy. We enjoyed the stories as well as the bonus features which included the silly song “Tooth Day”, a history of Mother Goose, and more! Look for it at a store near you in March.
