This week’s album, Zak Morgan‘s “The Barber of the Beasts”, has it all. The music is tight, the words have depth. It’s fun but it’s also educational. As you bop along with the fun rhythms, catchy melodies, and zany lyrics you realize you’re having fun much sooner than you realize you’re learning something.
It starts with the Overture, a great instrumental piece that really sets the stage for something big. As with any traditional overture you even get a sneak at some of the motives you’ll hear in upcoming songs — a great listening exercise for you and the kids! (Start with “Minor Miners”, that’s the easiest one to hear with it’s climbing melodies.) The subsequent songs are thick with clever vocabulary, and with the full lyrics and an accompanying glossary in the liner notes it’s a fun way to learn a few puns. The more you listen the more you get the double entendres. There are a few tender spots along the high-energy path, and I especially love the ballad “Let Me In” a sweet message to all our children that their loving parents support them and can help them through difficult times. The bonus track is easily my favourite, a hilarious message against a common childhood habit.
