It’s summertime! The schoolchildren are itching to leave their desks and so are us grownups! It’s time to get outdoors and have an adventure and The Okee Dokee Brothers‘ new CD “Can You Canoe?” is the perfect soundtrack for your summer travels. Last June Joe and Justin travelled down the Mississippi River and wrote this album, the perfect backdrop for your own summer exploits. They also brought a camera crew and this album includes a dvd that is part documentary and part music video.
This new album has a timeless sound to it, taking you back to a simpler past of the Tom Sawyer variety while still keeping things fresh. The Okee Dokee Brothers‘ soft bluegrass sound is easy to listen to and the perfect backdrop to tell their story of travelling down the Mississippi River. I can’t listen to this album without wanting to plan our family’s next camping trip or hike. There isn’t a better genre for outdoorsy fun, and The Okee Dokee Brothers do it with humour and panache.
In addition to being musically easy to listen to, the lyrics are quite clever. None of this blablabla filler you get is so much music these days; these two use beautiful imagery to describe outdoor life with a perspective that makes any listener feel like he’s there. Some of my favourite lines come from the songs “Thousand Star Hotel” and “Bullfrog Opera.” “Campin’ Tent” is very timely and has giggles for you as well as your children. “Mr. & Mrs. Sippy” is my favourite “Mississippi” song to date, a clever twist on the river name. I could go on, listing what I liked about each of the 15 songs, but instead I’m going to give you something to look forward to while I make some camping plans.
We didn’t watch the DVD until we had a really good grasp of the music and it was a lot of fun to put faces to the voices, put scenery to the music (my children have not yet seen the Mighty Mississippi,) and put some jokes among it all as well. I love to see people who truly enjoy what they do. I thought it would be less appealing to the kids than the adults, but when it was over Blue asked me to play it again. Who knew my five year old was a documentarian? Well, who could resist the hilarious silent film “how to build a fire in 13 steps”?
“Can You Canoe?” is the fist of what they are calling their Adventure Album Series. Where will they go next? Your guess is as good as mine. But I’ll tell you this: I can’t wait to hear what they have in store.
“Can You Canoe?” is being released today and we have one album (CD ad DVD) available for giveaway to one lucky US resident. Giveaway after the jump.
