Where do you live? I live near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada’s capital city. It’s a small city full of green spaces, and a canal that becomes the world’s largest skating rink in the winter.
Tell me a little bit about what you make…….. I create original handcrafted designs for kids and their families that are both functional and modern/offbeat. Using all natural fabrics, mostly organic, vintage or reclaimed, I try to design items that are colorful, fresh, unique and sustainably useful.
Why did you decide to start your shop? …..Starting my online shop was an expansion of the kind of pieces I was selling at craft shows. I recognized that people were asking for organic and upcycled quilts, blankets, toys and more that were handcrafted, that wouldn’t cost the earth. And modern – fresh and simple with clean lines and interesting colors like orange, red and damask.
Why Etsy? The Etsy site with its multitude of beautiful shops filled with so many different handcrated items seemed like a wonderful fit for my shop. I especially value being part of a community of craftspeople and artisans that promotes creativity and quality while avoiding purchasing things that may have been created with sweatshop labor. I think this is particularly important when it comes to babies and little kids – we need to clothe them and swaddle them in pieces that are infused with positive energy.
Whats your bestseller?….. Presently, my best sellers are colorful, modern, organic cotton quilts and bamboo blankets.
How did you come up with your shops name?…… I chose SewnNatural as a way of describing in one word the shop’s focus on natural fiber fabrics that are sewn creations.
Where do you find your inspiration? Inspiration comes from everywhere….colors in nature, the needs of a young child or family, a photograph, a memory from previous times. Sometimes while looking at a piece of fabric, it will almost tell you what it would like to become. Insipration is around all of us.
What’s the best part of your day?…. The best part of my day is when I am creating something new at my cutting board or sewing machine and all the ideas are coming together into a finished piece.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?…… Sharing time and experiences with family and grandchildren, as well as enjoying nature.
