Having a baby is hard. I mean, actually giving birth to a baby is hard. Some of us have the traditional type of delivery- a large watermelon pushing it’s way out of a tiny hole, but I get to do it a little differently. I have had all my babies via cesarean section and therefore require a lot of postpartum care. I can’t walk or really move for the first day following delivery, and I have nurses in and out of my room checking me for blood clots, taking my temperature, my blood pressure, dosing me with pain medication, monitoring my vitals, changing my undergarments… it’s not pretty. I will forever be grateful to those postpartum nurses that so kindly helped me to feel human again.
With my first baby, my temperature dropped to an unhealthy level following the surgery and my Labor & Delivery Nurse covered me in warm blankets, all the while making sure I didn’t even realize there was a serious problem. She taught me how to breastfeed my baby in those first precious feedings, and cared for me until she passed me on to the next nurse in the Mother/Baby Care unit. I will never know if she received my “thank you” card for sure, but even the words I wrote in that note can’t express the way I felt about her care and the impact that she had on my life that day.
